Introduction
Het Havenlicht (the Harbourlight) was born in 1974 in Amsterdam. Driven by the urge to share the gospel with the "strangers at our doorsteps", Theo and Yvonne van Zuilekom started to visit the Port of Amsterdam.
Through the years the number of volunteers grew and the work could expand to other ports. In 1986 the work was officially registered as a foundation.
In time cooperation with fellow harbourworkers around the world started to form itself in all kind of ways. This is important, so we can always follow seamen on their way to other harbours, and provide them with contacts over there. On the other hand we are able to exchange material, knowledge and experience with our co-workers around the world.
For these reasons, het Havenlicht decided in the spring of 1991 to start an even closer relationship with the much larger English organisation: The Seamen's Christian Friend Society (SCFS). Since those days we are using the name "Havenlicht/SCFS". Even as a part of the SCFS, we still have our own responsability in managing our foundation.
